HELPline is the INFORMATIONAL and CRISIS HOTLINE for Door County.
HELPline is answered at by the office staff Monday through Friday between 8 – 4:30. After hours, weekends and holidays a call forwarding service is used to transfer all incoming calls to trained operators.
Every operator receives 36 hours of training with additional in house volunteer time on the line prior to taking shifts at home. Training includes: Communication skills and role play, Domestic Abuse, legal issues such as Temporary Restraining Orders’s, Alcohol or Other Drug Abuse, Child Abuse and Neglect, Values Clarification, disabilities, mental health, suicide - harm to self and others, Elder services, children’s services – visitation and exchange, youth in crisis and runaway youth, community resources, grief and emergency services. As well as HELPline mechanics.
The HELPline operator is never alone and never provides direct one-on-one services. On call staff provides any needed emergency intervention and referral.
HELPline is affiliated with Wisconsin AIRS, the statewide information and referral system.
HELPline is contracted by Community programs, CADC, Compassionate friends and NAMI, to provide 24 hour services for these agencies.
HELP maintains an area resource folder, which is available in CD form for $10. Volunteers routinely make calls to area agencies to update information.
